Traditional people used animal calls to assist them in hunting pursuits.

The best known northern calling practice in hunting is done in the fall during the moose's rutting season. This hunt is usually done from the water.

The hunter sits in a canoe close to shore and makes a series of grunting sounds that imitate the moose searching for a mate. Sometimes a birchbark horn is used to amplify the sound.

Cow moose may respond to the call and approach with romantic intentions. Bull Moose will hear the sound and come to challenge the intruder.

Some exciting moments can be had when a large bull in full rut answers the call!

Animal calling has been a skill competition in northern King Trapper contests for many years.

Over the last three decades, Franklin Carriere, originally from Cumberland House, has won these contests in communities across North Western Canada.

He is widely recognized for his animal calling skills and performs demonstrations at many public functions.
